 Shane’s Inner Kind of Joy

 Her words on why she started the campaign for children with cerebral palsy were like colorful rainbow lighting up a dark sky: There’s always an inner Joy …a feeling that i can’t explain…creating a smile from an innocent spirit, and letting them feel that they are important is really fulfilling…it makes my day complete. Thus, Ardee Smile Kidz (ASK) was born in Koronadal City, Philippines.

She started helping two children with cerebral palsy – not counting her own first-born son Ardee. She never thought her small act of kindness would go far. That’s what she thought!

Audrey Hepburn said once: As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. This is exactly what happened to Shane Ladot-Cayan.

Now, they’re 30. Yes, 30 children with varying degrees and cases of cerebral palsy. The friends and acquaintances who stood up to support also tripled in number. Are you one of these kind and fortunate souls? Imagine trying to transform the lives of 30?

It is not easy. It is taking part in the burden that 30 parents are carrying. In one of the events bringing the families together, at least five mothers stood up and expressed their gratitude that Ardee Smile Kidz became their refuge. It is, thus, not a breeze – but it is worth it all the way. Shane made a very clear point here.

The Ardee Smile Kidz (ASK) team spreads love and hope to children with cerebral palsy.

According to neuropsychologist  Rick Hanson, author of Just One Thing, “When you express your giving nature, it feels good for you, benefit others, prompts them to be good to you in turn, and adds one more lovely thread to the great tapestry of human generosity”. So, true, isn’t it? Everything comes full circle. Often, the peace of mind we seek starts when we give ourselves to others.

Shane’s dream is bigger that her heart. She has seen the huge need even just around South Cotabato and its neighboring provinces. It is just a tip of an iceberg. She is hoping to be able to build a center someday for children afflicted with cerebral palsy – a bigger room for therapy, a playground and a place will parents will learn more and get equipped on how to handle their own children’s needs. Can we help her?

Her small clinic in Koronadal City, Philippines has been a buzz of activities when the children started to increase. It has become a refuge and a place of hope. Hope springs eternal. When there is hope – everything is possible. Ardee Smile Kidz does its own part of weaving hope in the tapestry of life in this part of the country.

It may be small if we measure it with billions of problems the earth’s population is faced with – but for the 30 children and their families, it is already creating a world of difference. One important thing Shane has delivered – letting these children know that they are loved, that they are precious, that they are God’s children equal with everyone else and deserving of every blessing possible.

We look up at heroes who give up their lives for the love of something they believe in. There are also heroes like Shane who live up a beautiful life sharing it with others.
